Measuring the Earth's core

Earth image The figure opposite show the structure of the Earth. The outer core of the Earth is liquid. The mantle and the inner core are solid.

Only 'P' waves can travel through the liquid outer core. By measuring 'P' and 'S' waves after an earthquake at different points across the globe, we can estimate the size of the Earth's liquid outer core.
