Assumed pre-knowledge

Students should be able to recognise and use:

the idea of a chemical reaction;
the terms reactants, products, energy and covalent bond.

Learning outcomes

After completing this unit, students should be able to:

describe energy changes in bond formation and bond breaking;
explain energy diagrams representing endothermic and exothermic changes;
describe the differences between endothermic and exothermic reactions;
use a given equation and bond energy data to find the change in energy during a reaction;
qualitatively apply the idea of endothermic and exothermic reactions to experiments and everyday life situations;
successfully complete the revision quiz at the end of the unit;
explain each of the following words:
activation energy, bond energychemical reaction, energy diagram, endothermic, exothermicfuelproduct, reactant.
