Take a capacitor charged to a value Q when the voltage across it is V.  We already know that Q µ V.

If the capacitor now starts to discharge through a load, a very small amount of charge DQ will flow from the capacitor plates.

The resulting work done (or energy lost) is therefore VDQ, which is represented by the highlighted strip on the diagram.

Have a go imageAs the capacitor further discharges, similar strips are created as more energy is lost.  Add each strip to the graph one by one by clicking anywhere on the graph.

Questions image(1) What is the total energy transferred?

Q×V
½
×Q×V
Q / V
V / Q

(2) Remember that E µ V2. We can substitute Q = CV into this new equation to give a new equation for the energy transferred.  What is this equation?

E = 2CV
E = C2V2
E = ½CV2
E = ½C2V
